On July 12, 2018, I had my ovaries and Fallopian tubes removed. My risk of getting ovarian cancer just went way, way down.
This past Thursday, I had a "bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy" -- meaning my healthy ovaries and Fallopian tubes were removed. It was my first real surgery. Last thing I remember is the anesthesiologist putting the oxygen mask on me. Next thing I knew, I was waking up in the recovery area.
This was a laparoscopic, outpatient procedure. They pumped my abdomen up with gas (so they can see what they're doing), put a camera in from a small incision near my belly button, and worked through two small incisions (one on each side) in my lower belly. The left one is slightly larger because that's where they insert and remove a small plastic bag where they put the tissue they are removing. Remarkable!
It's now Day 4 post-surgery and I'm happy to report that the recovery has been pretty easy. I've had only a little pain and all I've taken is Advil for it. I was relieved not to have to use the narcotics. I'm taking it easy. Just a little tired and moving slowly. The bloated feeling is the worst part, as the gas takes a while to work itself out of your body. It's mostly gone now.
